The upside of having a poor memory for books - often recalling no more than an aura, a characteristic glow - is that rereading can be as fresh a pleasure as a first reading. An instance: I know that 20 years ago or more, I read Eothen: Traces of Travel Brought Home from the East, by A.W. Kinglake, but, coming across it again recently, I realised how very little I remembered of it, so I'm reading it again(?) as a bedside book - and sure enough, it's coming up as good as new. It's an extraordinary piece of work, springy, youthful, vivid, disorganised, spontaneous - the very antithesis of everything you'd associate with the label 'Victorian travel book'. Here's the opening paragraph: 'At Semlin I still was encompassed by the scenes and the sounds of familiar life; the din of a busy world still vexed and cheered me; the unveiled faces of women still shone in the light of day. Yet, whenever I chose to look southward, I saw the Ottoman's fortress - austere, and darkly impending high
over the vale of the Danube - historic Belgrade. I had come, as it were, to the end of this wheel-going Europe, and now my eyes would see the splendour and havoc of the East.' That could almost be Patrick Leigh Fermor (whom I hadn't read when I first read Eothen). Who could fail to read on after such an opening? It soon becomes apparent that Kinglake is going to write only about what catches his interest, and through all these changing scenes is to maintain the cool, amused detachment of the English gentleman, even (or especially) when in mortal danger. Contemporary readers looking for the kind of historical, topographical and ehtnographic baggage that weigh down so much travel writing of the period would have been disappointed - or pleased; the book was very popular and sold extremely well. Here's another chapter opening: 'Beyrout on its land-side is hemmed in by mountains. There dwell the Druses. Often enough I saw the ghostly images of the women with their exalted horns
stalking through the streets; and I saw, too, in travelling, the affrighted groups of mountaineers as they fled before me, under the fear that my troop might be a company of Income-tax commissioners, or a press-gang enforcing the conscription for Mehemet Ali; but nearly all my knowledge of the people, except in regard to their mere costume and outward appearance, is drawn from books and despatches. To these last I have the hounour to refer you.' At which he takes off to make the acquaintance of the near-legendary Lady Hester Stanhope at the desert convent where she had set up her court. This is one of the most memorable (even to me) chapters of the book, and I am about to come to another, 'Cairo and The Plague', in which our hero lingers insouciantly in the city while the plague rages all around him. I'm looking forward to reading that - as if for the first time.

Back in Quito

View the trip so far

After the Galapagos, I flew back to Quito to meet up with my friend Jens. We stayed at the Hostal Chicago on a recommendation. The hostel itself was okay, but the staff wasn´t very friendly. My room only had one tiny vent “window†in the bathroom that opened into my neighbor´s bathroom. It was a little annoying but it was okay.

On Friday I climbed the towers of the Basillica. It was an amazing view from up there. I then met up with Jens after his spanish class and ran around the city looking for a doctor for him, and looking for an alarm clock for me. Needless to say, we didn´t find either of them. We then headed to Mariscal to find the hostel where some of my friends from the Galapagos where staying. We had a lot of trouble finding them as well. Did I mention that it was raining the whole day? When we finally found their hostal, they were heading out to dinner. So we joined them. While walking around looking for a place to eat, we ran into another group that were also on the boat with us, so we all went out to dinner. It was a lot of fun. Some of us went out dancing and closed the place down. I was then taken to an after hours place by some Ecuadorians that we had met at the first club. I didn´t get back to my hostel until 6am. Ecudorians drink and party a lot!

The next morning I woke up at 10am, to go to Otovallo, for their Saturday Market. It was a long three hour bus ride, sightly hung over, and no where near enough sleep. The market was nice, but I didn´t buy anything. I just walked around and looked. Then it started pouring and I ducted into a fast food joint for cover, had some lunch, read my book until the rains stopped, and headed back to Quito. That night I took it easy and hung out in the hostel.

The next day, Sunday, we just walked around El Centro, or Old Town, and had a pretty relaxing day. We headed back to the hostel, and took naps. Earlier we had decided that we would travel to Baños together, and then figure out where we would go from there, either together or on our own. That night I hung out with the remainder of my Galapagos friends that were still in Quito.

The next day we headed out to Baños.

Cruise deals rock the boat

The cruise ship season in Sydney is in full swing and it's booming, with ships forced to anchor in the middle of Sydney Harbour due to a lack of dock space.

But despite the onboard party atmosphere and the postcard image of luxury liner passengers waving to ferry commuters from ship rails, the world's cruise industry is sailing through rough financial seas as the global downturn bites into tourism.

Cruise operators are desperately trying to attract passengers for 2009, slashing prices, offering last-minute deals, two-for-one pricing, shorter cruises, family packages in which children sail free, and home-port cruises that avoid the cost of an airfare to reach an exotic departure port.

Norwegian Cruise Line last month announced "BookSafe," which will give passengers a full cash reimbursement if they cancel their cruise because of job loss. U.S. cruise retailers CruiseOne and Cruises Inc. have introduced "CruiseAssurance" to cover passengers in the event of them being laid off.

"What's changed is that cruise lines have offered ferociously discounted fares," Carolyn Spencer-Brown, editor-in-chief of the British website Cruise Critic, said in an interview.

"2009 is looking like the biggest buyer's market ever, with the absolute cheapest fares seen in a long, long time," she said.

So far, bookings for 2009 are holding, but Cruise Critic warns some cruise operators may gain 90-per-cent occupancy rates this year, but still lose money due to cheaper pricing and conservative spending by passengers.

"There's been no significant downturn for big-ship cruise lines. They're dropping prices as low as necessary to fill ships and then are hoping that passengers, in the holiday spirit, will feel moved to spend on onboard extras," Spencer-Brown said.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., the world's second-largest cruise operator, has already reported a profit collapse in the fourth quarter of 2008 and expects 2009 revenue to be weak as it offers discounts to lure passengers.

In January, Royal Caribbean reported fourth-quarter profit of $1.5 million, compared with $70.8 million in the same quarter the year before.

The Miami-based company stopped paying its dividend last November as it looked to save cash, following a similar move by its main rival, Carnival Corp. & Plc.

Carnival Corp., the world's largest cruise-ship operator, managed to beat expectations in posting a 3.6-per-cent rise in net income in the fourth quarter of 2008, based on higher room rates, cost cutting and offsetting fuel costs.

The company said its net income in the quarter was $371 million, compared with $358 million a year earlier. But the fourth-quarter profit included $31 million on the sale of the Queen Elizabeth 2 and a rapid decline in fuel costs.

Carnival says 2009 is going to be a tough year. It will report its first-quarter results this month.

The cruise industry has seen unprecedented growth in recent decades thanks to soaring popularity in North America and Europe, the two main markets, and emerging cruise ship markets in Asia and Latin America.

Since 1980 the average annualized growth of North America has been 7.4 per cent and annual passenger volume has risen 79 per cent in the past eight years. An estimated 13.2 million people took a North American cruise in 2008.

The Cruise Lines International Association, North America's largest cruise-industry body, estimates 2009 will see only a five-per-cent rise in passengers, to about 13.35 million.

"The cruise industry is optimistic that it will weather the current economic conditions and continue to grow," said Robert Sharak, the association's executive vice-president for marketing and distribution.

"Overall bookings are holding. The primary trend that cruise lines are seeing is a late booking pattern. Consumers are waiting until the last minute to decide to travel," Sharak said.

Cheaper prices and incentives have seen some cruise operators post record bookings so far in 2009, he said.

Carnival recorded the highest weekly bookings in its history in the first week of March.

Britney condemns scuffle of two Circus tour roadies with cops

Britney condemns scuffle of two Circus tour roadies with cops

Washington, Mar 27 (ANI): Pop princess Britney Spears has condemned two of her Circus tour roadies for fighting with the police on March 25.

As per a criminal complaint, Rockey Lee DICkey, 34, had attempted to hit an officer who intervened during a drunken brawl with an unidentified man, and Alex Montes, 23, had allegedly stepped in and placed the officer in a headlock.

Montes later fled from the scene but was arrested shortly afterwards, while police had to reportedly use a Taser gun to subdue DICkey, who has been charged with simple assault and resisting arrest.

Both men have been charged with disorderly conduct, criminal conspiracy and public drunkenness, and are out on a 100,000 dollars bail.

Britney, 27, issued a statement on her blog, saying that the two men were not associated with the tour.

"They were two employees of a company contracted to provide equipment for The Circus and were not employees of the singer.

The Circus Starring Britney Spears tour does not support or tolerate this type of behaviour," Contactmusic quoted her as having written. (ANI)

Yahoo Shuttering Travel Bargains Site FareChase Today

Yahoo is cutting more fat today by closing its travel bargains website FareChase, which it originally acquired back in July 2004 and re-launched two years later. The company will be announcing the shut-down later today, and will start redirecting visitors of the service to its main travel site soon.

The service let customers perform comparative searches for pricing on flights, hotels, cruises and cars, but it was apparently not enough of a strategic product enhancement for Yahoo Travel, hence the company discontinuing it altogether to tighten its focus and cut costs in these difficult times.

Sounds like a plan to me.

According to Travel Weekly, Yahoo signed a new agreement with partner Travelocity in late February 2009, ensuring that the latter could continue its role as the primary booking engine for Yahoo Travel. In the past, Travelocity sparred with Yahoo over the prominent role that Yahoo gave FareChase on Yahoo Travel.

This is the latest deadpool decision from Yahoo in a long series of announcements.

The company had previously sold off shopping engine Kelkoo and shuttered online storage service Briefcase, photo sharing service Yahoo Photos, social network Mash, live video streaming service Yahoo Live, Ads in RSS, web-based video editing service JumpCut and student community website / job board KickStart.

Which service could be next on the chopping block?

Driving in France

Driving in France

drivinginfranceFor some, the idea of hitting the highways in a foreign country can be rather unsettling. However, if you choose to rent a car in France, a car can be a great way to see the beautiful French countryside. While I am always an advocate of traveling by train in France (the TGV is by far the fastest way to get around the country), a car allows you more freedom and the ability to leisurely meander through the French countryside, stopping at villages and small towns that you may miss otherwise. Especially in the less populated areas of the country, a car in these areas also allows a traveler to set his or her own agenda, stopping at interesting sights along the way and meandering through quaint villages.

Autoroutes

France is laced with a well connected network of high-speed highways called Autoroutes, which are mostly toll roads (péage). Unlike major highway systems in other countries, France’s Autoroutes do not have a systematic numbering system, but are named based on region. For example, Autoroutes A-1 through A-16 radiate from Paris. While these Autoroutes make for easy travel around the country, you are usually better off taking a train when traveling longer distances across France. Traffic in and around the large cities (like Marseille, Paris and Lyon) can also be heavy and cause long delays.

In addition, while the Autoroute system is a network of more than 7000 km/4200 miles of roads, because most highways work on the hub system (with Paris at the center of the hub) traveling from southeastern France to southwestern France can be tricky.

autoroutemap

Rest Stops

Much the interstate system in the United States, France’s Autoroutes also have rest stops along stretches of highways called Aires. Aires tend to be located about every 20 km and have everything from gas stations to restaurants to picnic grounds and restrooms.

Don’t be surprised if you find Turkish toilets (i.e. a hole in the ground) at some of these Aires. While they are clean, those who are uncomfortable with this type of toilet can always use the handicapped restrooms, which always have regular toilets (this is definitely something I usually do when traveling the highways of France).

Gas

As you will almost immediately notice when you arrive in France, gas is much more expensive in Europe than it tends to be in the United States. However, buying gas in France is pretty much exactly like it is in the U.S., except you pay by the liter in in Euros rather than by the gallon and with dollars (obviously).

While it easy to find gas stations all along the Autoroutes in France, the cheapest place to buy gasoline is usually at supermarkets off the highway and in town. If you plan your French road-trip well, you can get gas during a lunch break in town.

At the pump you can buy: unleaded (sans plomb) in either 95 or 98 octane, super unleaded (super) or diesel (gazole). Some stations will also sell what is called fuel in French, normally at a separate pump. Do not buy it; it is diesel that is only sold to farmers. You can be fined, if it is found in your tank. This diesel is colored red, unlike regular diesel.

If possible, rent a car that runs on diesel, as it is cheaper than unleaded. Also the mileage is better. While those coming from the U.S. may think that diesel cars are only huge trucks, this is not the case in France. Because diesel is cheaper in France, there are many companies (like Peugeot) that make mid-sized sedans in diesel models. This is probably the way to go.

Tolls

As stated above, most of France’s Autoroutes are toll roads. If a road charges a tool you will see it marked “a peage.†These tolls are either a flat rate paid as you enter the Autoroute or based on how far your drive. When you pay based on distance, you take a ticket at the station where you enter the Autoroute. When you exit, you give the ticket to the attendant at the exit station, and your toll will be determined. You can pay with either cash or credit card. Don’t lose your ticket as you will pay the maximum toll.

Driving License/Permits

If you are planning a vacation in France (versus moving there are staying more than 3 months), your domestic driver’s license suffices for the operation of a vehicle in France (unless you are under 18, in which case this is not the case). However, if you are one of those people that likes to ere on the side of caution in these situations, you can obtain an International Drivers Permit, which is a means by which police in a foreign country can know  in terms of translations in nearly a dozen different languages  that your domestic driver’s license is indeed recognized as being valid by the proper authorities in your country. While it is not really necessary to obtain a IDP before renting a car in France, you can get an IDP at the local office of your auto club (AAA, CAA etc.). They cost about $10 and just make sure you bring with you your driver’s license, cash and two passport sized photos for the card.

Driving Rules and Regulations

While the rules for driving in France will not vary largely from many other places in the world, it is important to brush up on a few things that may be different when driving in France.

Thanks to the crazy world of Twitter (you can follow me @WhyGoFrance), I had a few suggestions and tips come in about things to keep in mind when driving in France. Brittany gite owner, @la_vache said: “don’t forget that the French don’t use indicators, obey traffic lights or give priority to other cars already on a roundabout.â€

If you want to brush up on more French driving rules and regulations, you can check out this guide and make sure you’re ready to hit the road for your vacation in France.

Driving Times

While taking the train in France is almost always going to be faster than driving (thanks to the high speed TGV’s that travel at speeds of more than 200 mph), here is run-down on estimates of driving times in France.

Paris-Lyon: 5-6 Hours Paris-Nice: 8-9 Hours (Read Getting from Paris to Nice) Paris to Avignon: 6-7 hours (Read Getting from Paris to the South of France) Paris-Loire Valley Castles: 1-2 Hours (Read Getting from Paris to the Loire) Paris-Bordeaux: 6-7 Hours Paris-Brussels: 3 Hours Paris-Rennes: 4 Hours Paris-Dijon: 3 Hours Paris-Metz: 3 Hours Paris-Strasbourg: 4 Hours Paris-Marseille: 9-10 Hours Paris-Quimper/Brest: 6 Hours Lyon-Dijon:2 Hours Strasbourg-Mulhouse/Basel: 1.5 Strasbourg-Dijon: 4 Hours Strasbourg-Metz: 2 Hours Strasbourg-Lyon: 6 Hours Lyon- Marseille/Montpellier: 3 Hours Rennes-Quimper/Brest: 3 Hours Bourdeaux-Toulouse: 2 Hours Bourdeaux-Biarritz: 1.5 Hours
