Terry Ward Continental"˜s new daily nonstop service from Newark to Shanghai that debuted Wednesday. The introductory rates are crazy low (I saw round trips departing next week for less than $700), and finding myself suddenly in Shanghai is, well, a serious high.
Pam Mandel The trailer for "Where the Wild Things Are." I hit play with great trepidation, but from what I-ve seen so far, I can hardly wait to see the big screen version of Sendak-s perfect and compact adventure. Cranky and disenchanted, off goes Max to become king of the wild things, later happy to return to his dinner, still hot, and his own bed? What a perfect travel story. Via lots of places, but I like this Intelligent Travel post.
Valerie Conners A recent assignment sent me digging through photos and mementos from my first year living abroad. I came upon one of my favorite moments from that whole journey, luckily captured in a photo: a group of friends on our first trip to Rome, abroad for less than a week, stood gathered around stone ruins in the Roman Forum. We looked so darn young"”we were 19"”and our joy at the newness of travel is just palpable. We-re all laughing out loud, about to sit upon the wall, holding bread, cheese, and wine"”the first of many impromptu picnics and perfect moments as we traveled across the continent.
Rob Verger I loved flying through JetBlue-s new terminal, T5, at JFK. It was bright, clean and spacious inside. The airport is such an integral part of the travel experience"”I wish terminals were all this nice.
Jim Benning Magic Bus, Rory MacLean-s book about traveling the old hippie trail. I finally had a chance to crack it open this week, and it-s great.
Eva Holland I visited Atlantic City for the first time this week and found myself becoming surprisingly fond of the scruffy, down-and-out casino/beach town. The boardwalk was pretty dead, whether because of hard times or the lingering wintry weather I-m not sure. Here-s a photo I took of some surfers who braved the cold water:
Jenna Schnuer Great guides should never be taken for granted. Last week, Machaca Hill"˜s guides helped me go deep into the history, culture, and natural wonders of Belize-s Toledo District. And the last-minute run up the hill to really really see howler monkeys was worth every out-of-breath step. Monkeys!
Joanna Kakissis Snow and microbrew! Boulder got more than 16 inches on Thursday, a record of sorts. Since many businesses were closed and many of the University of Colorado students were on spring break, my friends and I headed to the Mountain Sun Brewery, the most popular place in town, in the hopes that we could finally have the place to ourselves. But it was as packed as always, full of revelers in stocking caps drinking pints of Colorado Kind Ale and Isadore Java Porter as if a blizzard wasn-t raging outside.
Michael Yessis I-ve watched the Onion News Network-s much-passed-around Franz Kafka International Airport video three times, and I still don-t think I-ve exhausted all of its brilliance.
