The South Georgia Technical College Law Enforcement Academy students traveled to the Georgia Supreme Court in Atlanta for a tour of the Court as part of the LEA training, stated Brett Murray, South Georgia Technical College Program Director of the Law Enforcement Academy.
Justice Harold Melton explained the operation of the court and answered questions from the SGTC Law Enforcement Academy students during a tour of the court. Justice Melton also showed the students a video, which gave additional information on the Georgia Supreme Court.
The south Georgia Technical College Law Enforcement Academy students also participated in a Mock Oral Argument Exercise in which each of them played a different role, including justices, attorney for the appellant, attorney for the appellate, clerk of the court, and deputy clerk. The opposing "attorneys" then argued their case in front of the "justices" before the "justices" retired to the deliberation room to decide the fate of the case. The case the students argued was based on an actual case from Alabama that the students had already discussed in class, so the students were very prepared and did an excellent job in presenting their respective side.
"The students thoroughly enjoyed the tour and especially the mock exercise," said Murray, who added that he would definitely take future classes back to Atlanta for this tour. "It helped the students to get a better grasp on the highest level of the judiciary system in Georgia, and allowed them to see what actually goes on "˜behind the scenes- of the oral argument process."
This is the first class of Law Enforcement Academy students at South Georgia Technical College. SGTC is currently accepting application for its second class which begins in June. For more information or to apply to the SGTC Law Enforcement Academy contact Brett Murray at 229.931.2756 or Vanessa Wall, SGTC Criminal Justice Program Chair at 229.931.6940.
